Desexing Your Pet - 14.10.2009

Surgical sterilisation of pets is recommended if they are not intended for breeding. The benefits to society include less unwanted animals requiring euthanasia, less feral animals and therefore less pressure on our native animals. The benefits to pet owners are that pets are less likely to wander, no unwanted litters, and reduced incidence of illness and cancer (eg testicular and breast cancers).
Sterilised pets are also more pleasant companions as their behaviour is less aggressive and they do not tend to mark their territory with urine, when compared to unsterilised pets. It is never too late to gain the benefits of sterilising your pet. Please contact the hospital if you require further information. The majority of sterilisation procedures do not involve an overnight stay, so your pet will not be away from you for long at all.
